The following is a translation of a journey from Scanderoon to Aleppo, and over the desert to Bagdad and Bussorah, made in the year 1801. The original manuscripts were written in Arabic by a native of Aleppo, who accompanied the British army on their expedition to Egypt. The journey is full of interesting details about the countries through which the author passed, and the manners and customs of the people.

From Scanderoon to Aleppo

We left Scanderoon on the 1st of March, and proceeded to Antioch, where we arrived on the 3rd. Antioch is a large and populous city, situated on the banks of the river Orontes. It is the see of a Greek patriarch, and contains many churches and mosques. The streets are narrow and dirty, but the houses are well built. The environs of Antioch are delightful, and abound in gardens and vineyards.

We left Aleppo on the 15th of March, and proceeded to Bir, where we arrived on the 18th. Bir is a small town, situated on the banks of the river Euphrates. It is the frontier town of Syria, and is garrisoned by a body of Turkish troops. From Bir we proceeded to Rakka, where we arrived on the 21st.
