Gentileschi was born in Rome in 1593, the daughter of the painter Orazio Gentileschi. She trained in her father's workshop and quickly became a skilled painter in her own right. In 1611, she married the painter Pierantonio Stiattesi, and the couple had four children.

Gentileschi's early work was influenced by her father's style, but she soon developed her own unique style. Her paintings are characterized by their strong chiaroscuro (contrasts of light and dark) and their dramatic, often violent subject matter. She frequently depicted strong and heroic women, such as Judith and Salome.

Gentileschi's work was not always well-received by her contemporaries. Some critics objected to her depiction of strong women, and she was often accused of being too masculine. However, she also had many supporters, including the powerful Medici family of Florence.

In the 1630s, Gentileschi moved to England, where she worked for the court of King Charles I. She returned to Italy in 1640 and continued to paint until her death in 1653. Her work is now considered to be one of the most important contributions to the Baroque era.
