Biography

Esaias van de Velde was born in Amsterdam on May 17, 1587. He was the son of a glass painter, and he studied under Gillis van Coninxloo. In 1612, he traveled to Italy, where he spent three years studying the works of the Italian masters. He was particularly influenced by the work of Annibale Carracci and Caravaggio.

In 1615, van de Velde returned to Amsterdam, where he quickly established himself as one of the leading landscape painters of his time. He was known for his idyllic scenes of the Dutch countryside, which often featured mythological or biblical figures. His work was highly sought after by collectors, and he received commissions from all over Europe.

In 1630, van de Velde moved to The Hague, where he died on November 18, 1630.

Style

Van de Velde's style was characterized by its naturalism and its use of light and shadow. He was particularly skilled at depicting the effects of weather and atmosphere. His work is often compared to that of his contemporary, Pieter Bruegel the Elder. However, van de Velde's work is more lyrical and less satirical than Bruegel's.
