The Early Years

Las Vegas was founded in 1855 by a group of Mormon missionaries led by William Bringhurst. The missionaries were looking for a place to settle where they could practice their religion freely. They chose the Las Vegas Valley because it was isolated and had a good water supply. The missionaries built a small fort and began to farm the land. However, the settlement struggled in its early years, and many of the missionaries left. In 1861, the remaining missionaries were forced to abandon the fort when the Paiute Indians attacked.
