In this article, we will provide step-by-step instructions for three popular watercolor styles: wash, wet-on-wet, and dry brush. We will also provide tips and tricks for creating unique and beautiful watercolor paintings.

Materials

  • Watercolor paints
  • Watercolor paper
  • Brushes (a variety of sizes and shapes)
  • Water container
  • Palette
  • Masking tape (optional)
  • Paper towels

Step-by-Step Instructions

Wash Technique

  1. Prepare your watercolor paper. Stretch the watercolor paper over a drawing board or frame and secure it with masking tape. This will help to prevent the paper from buckling when you add water.
  2. Choose your colors. Select two or three colors that you want to use for your wash. The colors should be complementary or analogous, meaning that they are either opposite or adjacent to each other on the color wheel.
  3. Wet your brush. Dip a large, soft brush into clean water and shake off any excess water.
  4. Apply the watercolor paint to the brush. Load the brush with one of your chosen colors. Gently tap the brush on a paper towel to remove any excess paint.
  5. Apply the wash to the paper. Start by applying the watercolor paint to the top of the paper. Use light, even strokes to gradually move the paint down the paper. As you move the brush down the paper, add more water to create a gradient effect.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with your other chosen colors. Overlap the washes slightly to create a blended effect.
  7. Allow the painting to dry completely. Once you have applied all of your washes, allow the painting to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Wet-on-Wet Technique

  1. Prepare your watercolor paper. Wet the watercolor paper with a clean, wet brush. The paper should be damp but not soaking wet.
  2. Choose your colors. Select two or three colors that you want to use for your wet-on-wet painting. The colors should be complementary or analogous, meaning that they are either opposite or adjacent to each other on the color wheel.
  3. Apply the watercolor paint to the wet paper. Load a brush with one of your chosen colors. Gently tap the brush on a paper towel to remove any excess paint.
  4. Apply the paint to the paper. Start by applying the watercolor paint to the top of the wet paper. Use light, even strokes to gradually move the paint down the paper. The paint will spread and blend as it comes into contact with the wet paper.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 with your other chosen colors. Overlap the paint strokes slightly to create a blended effect.
  6. Allow the painting to dry completely. Once you have applied all of your paint, allow the painting to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Dry Brush Technique

  1. Prepare your watercolor paper. Stretch the watercolor paper over a drawing board or frame and secure it with masking tape. This will help to prevent the paper from buckling when you add water.
  2. Choose your colors. Select one or two colors that you want to use for your dry brush painting. The colors should be contrasting, meaning that they are opposite each other on the color wheel.
  3. Dampen your brush. Dip a small, round brush into clean water and shake off any excess water. The brush should be damp but not wet.
  4. Load the brush with watercolor paint. Load the damp brush with one of your chosen colors. Gently tap the brush on a paper towel to remove any excess paint.
  5. Apply the paint to the paper. Start by applying the watercolor paint to the top of the paper. Use light, quick strokes to gradually move the paint down the paper. The paint will not flow smoothly like it does with wash or wet-on-wet techniques. Instead, it will create a textured effect.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with your other chosen color. Overlap the paint strokes slightly to create a blended effect.
  7. Allow the painting to dry completely. Once you have applied all of your paint, allow the painting to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Tips and Tricks

  • Experiment with different colors and combinations to create unique effects.
  • Use a variety of brush sizes and shapes to create different textures and effects.
  • Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Watercolor painting is a forgiving medium, and you can always start over if you don't like the way something looks.
  • Practice regularly. The more you practice, the better you will become at watercolor painting.

Watercolor painting is a rewarding and versatile medium that can be used to create a wide range of styles and effects. By following the step-by-step instructions in this article, you can learn the basics of watercolor painting and start creating your own beautiful works of art.
