Rahel Varnhagen was born on May 19, 1771, in Berlin, Prussia. Her father, Levin Markus Levin, was a wealthy Jewish merchant, and her mother, Henriette Friedrike, was a writer. Rahel was the eldest of five children. She had three sisters, Rosa, Fanny, and Louise, and one brother, Ludwig.

Rahel's early education was informal. She was taught by private tutors and attended a boarding school for a short time. She was a bright and curious child and loved to read. She studied literature, philosophy, and history. She also learned to speak several languages, including German, French, English, and Italian.
