History of Bharatanatyam

The origins of Bharatanatyam can be traced back to the Natya Shastra, an ancient Indian treatise on performing arts written by Bharata Muni around the 2nd century BCE. The Natya Shastra describes the four main elements of Bharatanatyam: nritta (pure dance),nritya (expressive dance),natya (dramatic dance),and abhinaya (mimetic expression).

During the medieval period, Bharatanatyam was primarily performed by devadasis, women who dedicated their lives to serving temples. Devadasis were highly skilled dancers and musicians, and they played a significant role in preserving and developing Bharatanatyam.

In the 19th century, Bharatanatyam began to decline as British colonialism and Victorian morality influenced Indian society. However, in the early 20th century, a revival movement led by Rukmini Devi Arundale and E. Krishna Iyer helped to restore Bharatanatyam to its former glory.

Philosophy of Bharatanatyam

Bharatanatyam is more than just a dance form; it is a spiritual practice. The dance is based on the Hindu concept of Nataraja, the cosmic dancer who represents the cycle of creation, preservation, and destruction. Bharatanatyam dancers strive to embody the qualities of Nataraja, such as grace, power, and wisdom.

Bharatanatyam is also a form of storytelling. The dance repertoire includes a variety of stories from Hindu mythology, such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Dancers use their bodies and expressions to bring these stories to life, creating a captivating experience for the audience.

Techniques of Bharatanatyam

Bharatanatyam is a highly technical dance form that requires years of training to master. The basic movements of Bharatanatyam are based on the adavu, a series of footwork patterns. Dancers also learn a variety of hand gestures, eye movements, and body postures.

Bharatanatyam is typically performed with live music, including drums, violin, and vocalists. The music provides a rhythmic accompaniment to the dance, and the lyrics often tell the story that the dancer is portraying.
